Quarry Tile Floor Cleaning & Restoration Derbyshire
Quarry tiles have been a common fixture in kitchens and interior flooring for decades. So much so, in fact, that they’re often concealed underneath other layers of flooring. Perhaps you’ve uncovered some in your home, or simply need help cleaning or maintaining your current quarry tile floor? Tile & Stone Medic Derbyshire are here to help.
Common issues when cleaning quarry tile floor
Quarry tile floors were once a proud feature in terraces and farmhouses across the country, but many of these floors have since fallen into various states of disrepair. Uncovering preserved quarry tiles from beneath tiling or carpet which has been laid on top is a common job. Depending on what type of adhesive has been used to hold the layered tile or carpet in place, removal can be challenging and should be handled by a professional to avoid damage to the quarry tiles. Strong adhesive can be particularly tough to remove with without the right tools.
- Engrained dust and dirt requiring a deep clean
- Dull, lifeless appearance requiring polishing and sealing
- Scratches from debris requiring buffing
- Cracks and chips requiring repair
Since quarry tile flooring can be many years old, often it simply needs a full professional clean to bring it back to life. Years of ground in dirt can lead some people to think their tiling is beyond repair, but that’s often not the case. Whilst the tiles may appear dirty and discoloured, they’re surprisingly resilient and can look as good as new after a proper clean.
Surface damage like scratches and other abrasions can occur if the tiles haven’t been properly sealed or the seal has worn out. Grit and dust can be trodden into the floor and over time can leave lasting damage. A professional polish, buff and reseal is usually enough to remove it. Where the damage is particularly bad tiles may need to be replaced.
Cracks can occur when quarry tiles haven’t been laid on an appropriate subfloor. The top surface of quarry tiles is water resistant but the underside can be damaged by liquids. Water seeping through the subfloor will weaken the strength of tile, making it more likely to become loose or shatter under impact. Cracked and shattered tiles require replacements.
How we maintain quarry tile flooring
Tile & Stone Medic Derbyshire work with a range of cleaning and repair products suitable for quarry tile floor restoration. Adhesives and marks from floors which have been placed on top of quarry tile flooring are easily removed with these. Once the residue has been identified it’s usually just a case of picking the most appropriate cleaning product and applying it to the quarry tiles.
After any surface glue has been removed we would typically give the quarry tiles a thorough clean. Since quarry tiles are pretty hardwearing, removing grease and dirt is rarely a problem. You may be surprised at how colourful the tiles are once we’ve gotten rid of the surface dirt!
Once the tiles have been properly cleaned we’ll be able to properly identify any damage. Any marks to the surface of the tiles can be buffed out and in cases where replacement quarry tiles are needed we’ll help source them.
Finally, when the quarry tiles have been cleaned and polished, we finish the restoration with a tough coat of sealer. Though quarry tile floors are remarkably hard wearing, professional sealer will keep them protected and ensure they stay looking great for as long as possible.
