Limestone is soft. That’s the thing to understand about it. It’s a lovely stone, pale and calm and easy to live with, but it’s made of calcium carbonate, so acid dissolves it, and it’s porous enough to soak up whatever lands on it. A glass of wine, a splash of lemon, a bottle of bathroom cleaner: any of them can leave a mark in minutes.
Most of the limestone floors we’re called to aren’t ruined. They’re dull, grubby around the edges, patchy where the sealer has worn through, and sometimes marked by a cleaning product that was never meant for stone. Nearly all of that can be put right.
We clean, hone and seal limestone in kitchens, hallways, conservatories and around swimming pools, in both polished and tumbled finishes.
What goes wrong with limestone
Scratching is the first thing. Grit walked in on shoes is harder than the stone, so it leaves fine scratches that catch dirt and make the surface look tired long before it’s actually worn.
Then there’s etching. If an acidic liquid sits on limestone, even briefly, it eats a pale, dull patch into the surface. People often mistake these for stains and scrub harder, which makes it worse. A stain sits in the stone. An etch mark is damage to the stone, and it takes honing to remove it.
Staining is the other big one. Limestone soaks up oil, wine, coffee and anything coloured, and once it’s below the surface, a mop won’t reach it.
Finally, sealer wears. Foot traffic and regular cleaning thin it out, and when it goes the floor starts to look flat and soaks up marks faster than it used to. It’s usually the first sign that a floor needs attention.
The wrong products make all of this worse. Many supermarket cleaners are acidic or too aggressive for limestone, and the damage they cause isn’t always reversible.

- If tiles are chipped or flaking, we deal with that as part of the job. If some can’t be repaired, we can help find replacements that match.
We don’t use bulky or noisy equipment, we protect the surrounding areas from dust and splashing, and we clear up when we’ve finished.
