A stone fireplace takes a lot of punishment. Smoke leaves a film on it, soot works into the pores, candle wax and log debris collect on the ledges, and over the years the whole thing turns a shade or two darker without anyone noticing. It’s usually only after a clean that people remember what colour it was meant to be.
The usual household methods tend to make things worse. Scrubbing soot spreads it, acidic or heavy-duty cleaners can etch softer stones, and too much water carries the staining deeper into the stone. That’s why it’s best to work out what the stone is before cleaning anything.

How we clean a stone fireplace
No two fireplaces are alike, so we adjust the method to the stone, how old it is and how much has built up on it. This is the usual sequence.
- Look at the stone first. We identify what it is and check its condition, because limestone, sandstone, slate and marble all react differently to cleaning products.
- Dry brush. Loose soot, dust and debris come off before any liquid goes on. This prevents the dirt being smeared into the surface.
- Lift the soot and staining. We use stone-safe cleaners matched to the stone and the type of marks, working in sections so nothing dries on the surface.
- Detail work. Carvings, mortar joints, mouldings and recesses are cleaned by hand, since machines and large brushes can’t get into them.
- Rinse and neutralise. All cleaner is removed so no residue is left to attract dirt or leave a haze.
- Sealing, if you want it. On porous stones such as limestone and sandstone, we can apply a breathable sealer to make future marks easier to deal with.
Our aim is to clean the fireplace without changing it, so the stone keeps its texture and its natural finish and doesn’t end up looking artificially new.

- Limestone. Attractive and fairly soft, and porous enough to hold on to smoke and soot. It’s easily damaged by acidic products.
- Sandstone. Common in older and rural properties. It absorbs moisture and grime readily, so it needs a gentle approach.
- Slate. Dense and dark. It copes well with cleaning but shows dust, wax and watermarks.
- Marble. Polished and elegant, but it stains and etches easily.
- Yorkstone and other local stones. Often uneven and individual, and they need cleaning that suits their surface.

What we deal with
- Soot and tar marks. Heaviest around the opening and above it, where smoke rises.
- General darkening. A slow build-up of fine smoke and household dust that dulls the whole surface.
- Candle wax and log residue. Common on mantels, hearths and ledges.
- Damp and algae marks. More often seen in older properties or on chimney breasts with moisture problems.
- Grime on the hearth. Hearthstones take the most wear and the most dirt from boots, ash and fuel.
If damp is behind the marks, we’ll say so. Cleaning will improve the look, but the cause needs fixing to stop them returning.
