How Amtico flooring can become damaged

Most issues we see with Amtico flooring are marks to the surface in one form or another. Like many other floor types, Amtico will develop marks and scratches if it interacts with hard or sharp objects. In the home this can often happen when moving furniture or if cookware is dropped. Furniture cups and similar solutions offer a degree of protection, but where the floor has already become marked, a range of fillers and polishing solutions can be applied to lessen, if not remove entirely, the damage.

Whilst Amtico is not as porous as limestone and similar natural materials, liquid damage will occur if spillages are not promptly wiped up. The narrow seams between the individual tiles are the most vulnerable point of entry for liquids. Delamination will eventually occur where Amtico has been excessively damp.

If not regularly swept, dirt will accumulate on the surface of Amtico and discolour its surface. This is more noticeable with lighter coloured finishes but should be treated in all cases to prevent bacterial build up and odour.

How to care for Amtico flooring

Care should be taken over which cleaning equipment and products are applied to Amtico flooring. Steam cleaners should never be used since they can cause irreparable delamination to the surface. Even some vacuum cleaners are unsuitable, so proceed with caution. If in doubt, our friendly technicians are happy to offer advice and services. Our experience with Amtico means we will never use products or equipment that will damage your floor.

How we clean Amtico flooring

Our workflow is quick, efficient and effective. We begin with a dry clean of the surface with a brush or mop to remove build up dust that could hamper the rest of the cleaning process. When the floor is clear of obstruction we can apply stripper. Stripper works to loosen stubborn dirt which has attached itself to the Amtico, without risking any damage to the floor itself. The stripper is then allowed to dwell on the Amtico for a short time before being washed off.

With the floor stripped we can then begin to dress it. A couple of coats of dresser are required to complete the job, and depending on the size of the room this will take around an hour, including drying time. Different coats are applied at right angles to achieve the most durable finish on the floor.

To finish, the Amtico can be polished to a satin or high sheen. Where you would like a specific finish please discuss this with one of our team and we’ll be happy to find a solution that works for you.
